Unit Linked Plan
Unit Linked Insurance Plans, popularly known as ULIPs, are insurance plans that provide the benefits of insurance cover as well as a market-linked investment under a single integrated plan. Life insurance companies, as providers of security to their customers are usually very tight fisted when it comes to investment of their funds, safety first being an overriding motivation. Many times, inflation plays the spoil sport. The long term purpose/goal of savings gets defeated.
Investment of policy funds in the market securities is an attempt to give higher returns to meet customer expectations about their long term goals. Market investment, however, carries market risk. Insurance companies work also as mutual funds to minimize the market risk. Through their sales organization, they spread awareness about this risk. The principle finally operates that investment returns are directly proportional to the market volatility. Greed and fear should not control investment decisions, and in the inter dependent world the variables which affect the price of stocks are virtually unlimited.
